Medical Advisory Board Bios

Dick Thom, DDS, N.D., graduated from the University of Toronto dental school in 1974 and practiced dentistry until 1986. He graduated from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine (NCNM) in 1989. Dr. Thom is a full-time professor at NCNM, teaching clinical and physical diagnosis, gastroenterology, neurology, and advanced classes in endocrinology and Therapeutic Drainage. In 2003 he authored one of the first books in the English language on this subject: Biotherapeutic Drainage Using the UNDA Numbers.
He is also a supervising physician at Natural Health Centers, the teaching clinic for NCNM. Dr. Thom has been in private practice in Beaverton, Oregon since 1990, specializing in the treatment of cancer, endocrine disorders, and autoimmune diseases. Since 1999, he has been lecturing in Canada and the U.S. to other physicians on the therapeutic benefits of homeopathic drainage. Dr. Thom's consulting firm, Wholistic Solutions , provides seminars entitled "The Health of Business, the Business of Health," to integrative and holistic physicians in the US and Canada. These seminars are designed to provide both a clinical and business foundation to the practitioner who wants to have a satisfying and successful medical practice.
Rita Bettenburg, N.D. graduated with a Bachelor of Sciences in Medical Technology from the University of Minnesota in 1974, after which she taught and conducted research in clinical laboratory medicine. In 1989 Dr. Bettenburg graduated from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine (NCNM) in Portland Oregon with highest academic honors, and did a one-year residency in Family Medicine. She is an associate professor at NCNM, teaches Clinical and Physical Diagnosis, and Pediatrics, and is the Dean of Naturopathic Medicine.
Dr. Bettenburg serves as Medical Director of Outside In, the interdisciplinary medical clinic for the homeless and indigent in Portland. She currently is a Council member of the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education (CNME), which performs programmatic accreditation for naturopathic colleges in the United States and Canada. She is the Medical Director of NaturNet, a naturopathic managed care panel, and is a member of the Data Safety and Management Board for ORCAMIND collaborative research at Oregon Health Sciences University. She was named Physician of the Year by the American Association membership in 1994, and maintains a small private practice in Portland in the Gateway District. She has served as Director of Research and Chief Medical Officer at NCNM. Dr. Bettenburg is also Past President of the Oregon Association of Naturopathic Physicians, and has served on the Board of Directors of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians.
Daphne Goldberg M.D.A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and the Medical College of Pennsylvania, board certified in Family Medicine and Holistic Medicine, and board member of the American Board of Holistic Medicine, Dr. Goldberg is dedicated to providing a full spectrum holistic family practice with a focus on women's health and obstetrics. She is well known as a patient-centered physician and natural childbirth advocate as well as for having one of the lowest c-section rates in Philadelphia. Dr. Goldberg is active both as a practitioner in private practice and as an educator and mentor at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School where she serves as an adjunct faculty member.
Dr. Goldberg is the co-founder and Associate Medical Director of the Covenant House Health Center, a shelter-based clinic for homeless adolescents. At Covenant House, she provides counseling, holistic adolescent care, prenatal care, and obstetrics. She works with a stress management specialist to provide at-risk youth with alternative means of violence prevention and wellness and is currently working on the creation of the first holistic health center for homeless and at-risk youth.
At the University Of Pennsylvania School of Medicine she teaches a Doctoring course to help medical students learn to be caring physicians, and has served as course director of electives in Community Oriented Maternity Care as well as the Medical Frontiers course on complementary and alternative medicine. She is the faculty advisor to the Complementary and Alternative Medicine medical student interest group.
In addition to her educational activities at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Goldberg has been invited as a guest lecturer on women's health and holistic medicine at other prominent institutions including Thomas Jefferson University School of Medicine, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Westchester University, and Drexel University School of Medicine. She authored two chapters in the latest edition of David Rakel's Integrative Medicine.
Marcus Miller, MD, ND is one of a small number of physicians to be board certified in both internal medicine and naturopathic medicine. Dr. Miller attended the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans after which he completed his internship and residency at Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland, Oregon. He graduated from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in 2001 with both academic honors and honors in research and was awarded the Tender Heart Award by his classmates. Dr. Miller is a faculty member at NCNM and when not teaching or seeing patients, Marcus pursues his passion for portrait painting and print making.
Steven Sandberg-Lewis, N.D., DHANP, CCH received his N.D. from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine (NCNM) in 1978. He had a full time private practice from 1978-1996, most recently on Orcas Island in Washington State. Since 1996 he has been a full-time professor at NCNM, teaching pathology, gastroenterology, and psychophysiology, and supervising students in the NCNM clinics. His approach to practice has a strong emphasis on functional lab diagnosis, digestive disorders, physical medicine, psychophysiology and energetic psychology techniques. Additional certifications are in Structural Integration (1996) and Homeopathy (1998). Additional trainings and practice include Thought Field Therapy, Neuro-emotional Technique, Bio-Linguistic Kinesiology, and Orthotic Casting.
Michael Traub, ND, DHANP, CCH was the first naturopathic physician in contemporary times to be appointed to a hospital staff - North Hawaii Community Hospital (NHCH). He was Chairman of the Integrated Healing Committee from the opening of the hospital in 1996 until 2001 and succeeded in gaining approval for the natural medicine formulary in the hospital including botanical, nutritional and homeopathic medicines. In 1998 he developed the Hawaii Residency Training Program at NHCH and served as the Residency Program Director until 2002. He conducted a pilot study at the hospital of integrated treatment programs for breast cancer.
From 2001-2003, Dr. Traub served as President of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP). He remains a member of the AANP's Scientific Affairs Committee. In 2006, he was honored by the AANP as "Physician of the Year."
Dr. Traub has held numerous other leadership positions within the naturopathic profession throughout his career, from Chairman of the Hawaii Board of Naturopathic Examiners to President of the Homeopathic Academy of Naturopathic Physicians and President of the North American Board of Naturopathic Examiners.
He has been invited to make presentations at numerous medical conferences, including the 1999 International Conference on HIV/AIDS in Paris. He is the author of "Essentials of Dermatological Diagnosis and Natural Therapeutics." He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Integrated Healthcare Policy Consortium and was co-author of the "Final Report of the National Policy Dialogue to Advance Integrated Health Care: Finding Common Ground, 2001-2002."
Since 1986, Dr. Traub has been Director of an integrated health care center (Lokahi Health Center) in Kailua Kona, Hawaii. He has a part-time practice in Marin County, California.
